There are many funding programs that support northern Ontario entrepreneurs and businesses during all stages of development. While the PIC strives to keep this list updated and relevant, we do not guarantee this, nor is this list exhaustive. We recommend you contact The Business Enterprise Centre, Timmins Economic Development Corporation, and other regional partners for information on other potential programs.

Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC)

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is a crown corporation and development agency of the Ontario government that invests in northern businesses and municipalities through conditional contributions, forgivable performance loans, incentive term loans and loan guarantees.

  • Northern Business Opportunity Program – Business Expansion Projects
    The Northern Business Opportunity Program supports the vision of the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario by encouraging business productivity and expansion, and global investment in northern communities.
  • Northern Business Opportunity Program – Small Business Start-up Projects
    The Northern Business Opportunity Program supports the vision of the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario by encouraging business productivity and expansion, and global investment in northern communities.
  • Northern Ontario Internship Program
    The intent of the Northern Ontario Internship Program is to strengthen Northern Ontario’s competitive advantage and build economic development capacity by attracting and retaining graduates in the North. The program provides recent graduates who are interested in launching and building their careers in Northern Ontario access to internships.
  • Northern Innovation Program – Industrial Research Chairs
    The Northern Innovation Program supports the vision of the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario by supporting the development and commercialization of new technologies that will contribute to future prosperity in Northern Ontario, and by fostering collaboration and partnerships among the private sector, academic institutions and research institutes.
  • Northern Innovation Program – Opportunity Assessment Projects
    The Northern Innovation Program supports the vision of the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario by supporting the development and commercialization of new technologies that will contribute to future prosperity in Northern Ontario, and by fostering collaboration and partnerships among the private sector, academic institutions and research institutes.

FedNor

FedNor is the Government of Canada’s economic development organization for Northern Ontario. Through its programs and services, and through its financial support of projects that lead to job creation and economic growth, FedNor works with businesses and community partners to build a stronger Northern Ontario.

  • Northern Ontario Development Program
    Through its flagship Northern Ontario Development Program, FedNor invests in projects that support community economic development, business growth and competitiveness, and innovation.
  • Youth Internship
    Not-for-profit organizations: FedNor will contribute up to 90 percent ($27,500) for the eligible costs of salary and employee benefit expenses for a period of 12 months in a full-time position.
  • Targeted Manufacturing Initiative for Northern Ontario – Productivity Improvements
    Through its Northern Ontario Development Program, FedNor can help existing Northern Ontario manufacturers upgrade and improve capital equipment used in manufacturing processes, including information and communications technology, to improve their competitiveness and productivity.

Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDCs)

Funds, loans, and programming in support of regional businesses.

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is the raising of funds through the collection of small contributions from the general public (known as the crowd) using the Internet and social media.

Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP)

BCIP was created by the Government of Canada to help kickstart businesses and get their innovative products and services from the lab to the marketplace.

NSERC

  • Engage – Supports post-secondary researchers to launch new research collaboration with an industrial partner through a short-term R&D project that applies their expertise to address a company challenge.
  • Collaborative Research and Development Grants – Initiative aims to enable technology development between post-secondary institutions and industry partners for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

CanExport

Provides incorporated or limited liability partnership companies with up to 50% funding to a maximum of $100,000 to help establish sales in new markets that the company has not exported to within the last 24 months. A company can submit an application for each new fiscal year.

Ontario Exporters Fund

The Ontario Exporters Fund is a grant program designed to assist Ontario businesses exporting for the first time or searching for a way to take their international business to the next level.

Export Access Market (EMA)

The EMA grant program is designed to assist Ontario exporters looking to expand growth in international markets.

AgriMarketing Program

The AgriMarketing Program helps farmers and food processors compete in markets at home and abroad. It supports the agriculture industry by creating and maintaining access to markets and taking advantage of market opportunities.

NEOnet

  • Broadband for E-business and Marketing Program (BEAM)
    The Broadband for E-business and Marketing Program (BEAM) helps alleviate some of the associated costs of establishing your business online or for the costs associated with implementing or upgrading E-business applications.
  • Small Business Assessment Monitoring and Planning (STAMP)
    The Small Business Assessment Monitoring and Planning (STAMP) project assists businesses ICT implementation obstacles, such as a lack of IT knowledge and/or capital for internal technological assessments. Businesses have an opportunity to have their ICT assessed by a qualified consultant.

North Claybelt CFDC

Entrepreneurs Francophones PLUS
The project allows Francophone private sector entrepreneurs to benefit from additional funds available through 2 programs: Vision + and Youth Internship.

Canada-Ontario Job Grant

Provides grant funding support to employers for eligible employee training and skill development.
